Peyronie’s Disease is a condition that causes many different painful and life-altering symptoms:
- Painful erections
- Soft erections
- Narrowing of the penis
- Shortening of the penis
- Lumps in the penis
- Bent or curved penis
- Problems with sexual intercourse
Peyronie’s Disease is seen in approximately 4 men out of 100 between the ages of 40 and 70, although the number could be higher due to embarrassment about discussing these problems with a doctor. Peyronie’s Disease has been diagnosed in some men in their 30s, but it is very rare.
Symptoms from this condition are due to plaque buildup underneath the skin of the penis. The penis will bend or develop indentations when erect due to these plaque formations. The areas of plaque are palpable through the skin and are often painful.
Plaque typically builds up on the top of the penis (the dorsal side), causing the penis to bend upwards during an erection. In the 30% of cases where the plaque forms on the bottom of the penis, the direction of the bending will be down or sideways. More complex curving can result when there are more than one plaques form.
Physical changes are not the only symptoms experienced by men with Peyronie’s Disease. Embarrassment and problems with sexual intercourse can cause stress and depression in some men. Call us at Magic Valley Urology to discuss your Peyronie’s Disease symptoms.
